Copycovers

Until now, when a paperback book required library binding there were two ways of retaining the original cover with its bibliographic and design information. The library bound paperback could either have the paper covers bound in along with the text, or the original cover could be removed, laminated with a clear polyester film on one side and a paper backing on the other, and used as the cover material for a new cover. Upon inspection, both of these processes have limitations. The bound in paper cover inhibits opening at the front and back of the book because it is too stiff and it is often tipped to the textblock causing further problems. The laminated cover is too small for a hardcover book, which grows by the thickness of the boards. The laminated cover is also very stiff because the paperback1s original cover is a heavy paper made even thicker by the layers of polyester and laminating paper, further restricting openability. Acme Bookbinding has introduced a new binding option that retains the original cover design and information with no adverse effect on the structure of the book. The original cover is copied onto a new reinforced paper based cover material called Imagease. The Copycover is then used in place of a book cloth to make a new hard cover for the rebound text block. The new cover is flexible and in no way restricts openability of the new bound book. Graphics and call number labels are preserved while you reduce the work of filling out a binding slip. This type of cover can be used for both adhesive bound and retained sewing methods of leaf attachment. There are several procedures and limitations involved in producing this type of cover.

  1. The cover copy is enlarged 5% to compensate for the wider spine and the squares (distance from the edge of the cover to the text block) of the new hard cover book.
  2. Due to magnification, paper limitations of the photocopier, and the requirement for a 3/4 inch turn under on all four sides of the cover; the maximum size of the original book can be no more than 10-1/4 inches tall by 7-1/2 inches wide and never more than 1-1/4 inches thick,
  3. Dark glossy covers produce a series of flashes along the edges of the spine of the copied cover.
  4. Books will not be rounded and backed. This would make the spine of the book too large for the cover. Remember that all paperbacks are flat back and the cover was designed for a paperback.
  5. Books will not be trimmed. This ensures that text and graphics close to the edges of the copycover will not be cropped. A trimmed book would necessitate a smaller cover.

In addition to library bound paperbacks this option can be used to reproduce older decorated cloth covers when rebinding hard cover books. The cost for this option is in addition to the normal binding class price.

How to order:
Select this option when using manual binding slips by circling class 08, 09, 10, or 11 and writing COPYCOVER in the instruction box. With ABLE, use formats 08, 09, 10, or 11 and KP as an extra special in the Collation screen, or write Copycover in the instructions box.
