Library Binding: Leaf Attachment Choices

Double-fan Adhesive

Most often used method for binding periodicals and monographs (hard cover and paperbacks), when text block is less than 2 inches thick. Minimizes loss of binding margin and increases openability as compared to oversewing. ultrabind: Picture of Ultrabind equipment. Spine is notched prior to binding to increase glue/paper surface area. Books are rounded and backed to improve openability.

Materials

  • Endpaper: White single folio endpaper, buffered with calcium carbonate to achieve a pH of 8.5. Meets LBI Standards and A.N.S.I. Z39-48-1984 Standards for permanent and durable paper.
  • Adhesives: Internally plasticized PVA adhesives used for all applications: double fanning, spine lining, cover making, and casing in.
  • Spine linings: Stretchable cotton cloth
  • Cover boards: Made from Binders Board in three thicknesses depending on the size of the book: .070 inch if <9" tall, .095 if 9" to 10", and .110 if > 10".
  • Inlay: Made from 16 point alkaline paper.
  • Cover material: Group F buckram, (Group C book cloth could also be chosen). Acme also has introduced a new material "Classic Cloth" made from an acrylic coated English Finish Record Buckram.

Library Preparation

For Standard periodicals, covers should be removed (if not binding in), issues and cumulative indices and table of contents placed in proper order, checked for completeness, then secured together with string, ribbon or rubber bands. For Custom Periodicals issues should be placed in proper order, checked for completeness, then secured together with string, ribbon or rubber bands. Hardcover books should be checked for completeness. Paperbacks should have their covers removed (if not binding in) and checked for completeness.

Binding information should be filled out either on binding slips or in ABLE, Acme's binding preparation software, then placed in each volume. Information required: Account name and ID number, binding class, cover cloth color, stamping color, special instructions, title, and other desired variables (volume, number, months, year, call number, etc.). Much of the above information would be on either preprinted binding slips or in the ABLE program.

Oversewing

Used for binding periodicals and monographs. Generally used only when a textblock is over two inches thick and has at least 5/8 inch inner margin after trimming. Books are rounded and backed to improve openability.

Materials

  • Endpaper: White three leaf cotton cambric reinforced endpaper, buffered with calcium carbonate to achieve a pH of 8.5. Meets LBI Standards and A.N.S.I. Z39-48- 1984 Standards for permanent and durable paper.
  • Thread: Nylon thread
  • Adhesives: Internally plasticized PVA adhesives used for all applications: coating spine after sewing, spine lining, cover making, and casing in.
  • Spine lining: 100% cotton material with 68/68 threads per square inch.
  • Cover boards: Made from Binders Board in three thicknesses depending on the size of the book: .070 inch if <9" tall, 095 if 9" to 10", and .110 if > 10".
  • Inlay: Made from 16 point alkaline paper.

Machine Sew Through-the-Fold

Generally used when binding periodical issues comprised of separate signatures. This type of leaf attachment prevents loss of binding margin and maximizes openablity.

Materials

  • Endpaper: White single folio endpaper reinforced with cotton cambric (cambric and glue have neutral pH of 7) and buffered with calcium carbonate to achieve a pH of 8.5. Meets LBI Standards and A.N.S.I. Z39-48-1984 Standards for permanent and durable paper.
  • Thread: Nylon thread
  • Adhesives: Internally plasticized PVA adhesives used for all applications: coating spine after sewing, spine lining, cover making, and casing in.
  • Spine linings: Primary lining is made from 100% cotton material with 68/68 threads per square inch. Additionally a piece of 80 lb. alkaline paper is applied to the spine surface over the cotton lining for thick volumes.
  • Cover boards: Made from Binders Board in three thicknesses depending on the size of the book: .070 inch if <9" tall, 095 if 9" to 10", and .110 if > 10".
  • Inlay: Made from 16 point alkaline paper.
  • Cover material: Group F buckram, (Group C book cloth could also be chosen). Acme also has introduced a new material "Classic Cloth" made from an acrylic coated English Finish Record Buckram.

For Custom Periodicals issues should be placed in proper order checked for completeness, then secured together with string, ribbon or rubber bands. Please note that with STF binding, if pages are removed from the front, corresponding pages must be removed from the back of the signature; so are generally bound as is.

Binding information should be filled out either on binding slips or in ABLE, Acme's binding preparation software, then placed in each volume. Hand Sew Through-the-Fold

Generally used when binding periodical issues comprised of separate signatures and the signatures are either too thin or too thick to be done on a machine. In rare cases, used on monographs which require disbinding and resewing.

  • Thread: Cotton coated polyester
  • Sewing Tape: 1/2" cotton sewing tape
  • Adhesives: Internally plasticized PVA adhesives used for all applications: coating spine after sewing, spine lining, cover making, and casing in.
  • Spine linings: Primary lining is made from 100% cotton material with 68/68 threads per square inch. Additionally a piece of 80 lb. alkaline paper is applied to the spine surface over the cotton lining.

Recase

Chosen when a book with an intact sewn text block requires a new case. Also chosen for rebinding of paperbacks with Smyth sewn text blocks. Old spine lining and endpapers are removed, and new alkaline endpapers are sewn through the fold onto the first and last signatures. This process strengthens the spine and leaves the text block intact, with no loss of the binding margin due to milling.

  • Thread: Cotton coated polyester
  • Adhesives: Internally plasticized PVA adhesives used for all applications: coating spine after sewing on end sheets, spine lining, cover making, and casing in.
  • Spine linings: Primary lining is made from 100% cotton material with 68/68 threads per square inch. Additionally a piece of 80 lb. alkaline paper is applied to the spine surface over the cotton lining.
  • Cover boards: Made from Binders Board in three thicknesses depending on the size of the book: .070 inch if <9" tall, 095 if 9" to 10", and .110 if > 10".
  • Inlay: Made from 16 point alkaline paper.
  • Cover material: To demonstrate this new book cloth, this volume has been bound in "Classic Cloth" a new material introduced by Acme and made from an acrylic coated English Finish Record Buckram. Group F buckram or Group C book cloth could also be chosen.
