Library Binding: Leaf Attachment Choices
Double-fan Adhesive
Most often used method for binding periodicals and monographs (hard cover and paperbacks), when text block is less than 2 inches thick. Minimizes loss of binding margin and increases openability as compared to oversewing. Materials
Library PreparationFor Standard periodicals, covers should be removed (if not binding in), issues and cumulative indices and table of contents placed in proper order, checked for completeness, then secured together with string, ribbon or rubber bands. For Custom Periodicals issues should be placed in proper order, checked for completeness, then secured together with string, ribbon or rubber bands. Hardcover books should be checked for completeness. Paperbacks should have their covers removed (if not binding in) and checked for completeness. Binding information should be filled out either on binding slips or in ABLE, Acme's binding preparation software, then placed in each volume. Information required: Account name and ID number, binding class, cover cloth color, stamping color, special instructions, title, and other desired variables (volume, number, months, year, call number, etc.). Much of the above information would be on either preprinted binding slips or in the ABLE program. OversewingUsed for binding periodicals and monographs. Generally used only when a textblock is over two inches thick and has at least 5/8 inch inner margin after trimming. Books are rounded and backed to improve openability. Materials

Machine Sew Through-the-FoldGenerally used when binding periodical issues comprised of separate signatures. This type of leaf attachment prevents loss of binding margin and maximizes openablity. Hand Sew Through-the-FoldGenerally used when binding periodical issues comprised of separate signatures and the signatures are either too thin or too thick to be done on a machine. In rare cases, used on monographs which require disbinding and resewing. Materials

Also chosen for rebinding of paperbacks with Smyth sewn text blocks. Old spine lining and endpapers are removed, and new alkaline endpapers are sewn through the fold onto the first and last signatures. This process strengthens the spine and leaves the text block intact, with no loss of the binding margin due to milling. Materials
